Conductive Education (CE) is a specialised method of rehabilitation by learning which originated in Hungary in the late 1940's, founded by

Dr András Pető and views people as a whole, focussing on both the body and the mind.

Conductive Education uses learning strategies that:

  • empower and motivate
  • make movements/actions possible
  • focus on people's wishes, desires and ability to be active and independant

The weight of recent neuroscientic research suggests that high levels of neuroplasticity can be harnessed, allowing undamaged parts of the brain to take over some of the functions of the damaged parts.

Neuroplasticity refers to the way that neural pathways and synapses develop interconnect and form new connections. Neuroplasticity allows for enviromental influences to change the way the brain makes connections. It is particularly important because it allows for "re-mapping" of neural pathways where there has been damage to existing pathways.

Conductive Education can utilise the neuroplasticity of the brain in order to re-learn (sometimes fully, sometimes partially) functionality that may have been lost or impaired as a result of injury or illness. Specialist Conductors enable people to learn  how to overcome challenging situations, focussing on progress and positive outcomes.

Learners are equipped with problem solving skills and specialised strategies, allowing them to build upon their strengths and assets via a personalised programme of Conductive Education.

Our ultimate aim is to introduce people to different strategies that:

  • Develop and improve gross and fine motor skills
  • Encourage communication and social skills
  • Pave the way to a quicker recovery, and/or
  • Delay deterioration in the case of progressive conditions

  • Encourage leisure and recreational activity

These learning strategies come under the heading of Conductive Education. At the Personal Development Centre, Conductive Education involves programmes that focus on rehabilitation for adults aged 18 years and over.
