Young people must remain in education or training until they are 18.   We offer a placement until the end of the academic year they have their 19th birthday.  Some young people with an EHC plan may remain in education or training, free of charge, until they are 25 if it is agreed that it would be beneficial for them to do so.

When it is anticipated that a young person with an EHC Plan will soon be leaving education or training, the local authority should agree in advance to the support the young person might need.  An understanding of the young person’s needs to prepare for leaving School will have begun at the age of 14.  This is known as transition planning.

The School will help the young person prepare by involving them in an appropriate learning programme and the main discussions around transition will happen at the Annual Review meetings that focuses on the young person’s EHC plan.  Families will be involved along with certain professionals as appropriate.  The local authority will carry out an assessment prior to the young person leaving school if there is a need to plan for further education provision and/or social care; the young person’s health needs must also be considered.
